A Portable Generator Is Not a Cheap Substitute for a Standby Unit

The most common shortcut Houston homeowners try is grabbing a portable unit from a big-box store and running extension cords through a cracked window. It looks like a bargain next to a permanent install, right?

Bigger Is Not Automatically Better When You Size the Unit

Oversizing looks like insurance. In practice, a generator that’s too large for the actual load runs inefficiently, burns more fuel per useful watt, and wears its engine faster from light-load operation. Undersize it and you get the opposite problem: the unit trips, brownouts damage motors in the AC and refrigerator, and sensitive electronics take the hit.

Proper sizing is a load calculation, not a guess based on square footage. A licensed electrician walks the panel, measures the starting and running loads on the AC, well pump, oven, and anything else that has to stay on, and matches the unit and transfer switch to those numbers. Skip that step and you either overpay for capacity you’ll never use or find out you underbought at the worst possible moment.

Standby generators are engineered to sit idle for months and start on the first try. That reliability is a product of maintenance, not magic. A unit that hasn’t been exercised, had its oil changed, or had its battery tested may not start when the transfer switch calls for it.

Insurance carriers know this and will deny claims tied to unpermitted work.

Permitting, load calculations, gas line sizing, transfer switch selection, and the interlock with the utility all need a licensed hand. Standby Power Is Not a Niche Purchase Anymore

There’s a lingering sense that whole-home backup is a luxury item for a small slice of homeowners. The market data says the category is going mainstream.

That growth is driven by exactly the conditions Houston homeowners already live with: heavier weather, an aging distribution network, and appliances (medical equipment, home offices, EV chargers) that don’t tolerate downtime. Treating backup power as an odd purchase for preppers is out of step with where the rest of the market is heading.
